Cotton Percale Explained: A Guide to This Luxury Bedding Fabric

"Cotton Percale" – You’ve Probably Seen the Term While Shopping for Bed Linen...

But do you really know what it means? What are the benefits of this type of fabric? And should you be using it in your own home?

Today, RKF Home breaks down everything you need to know about this unique and refined weave — so you can decide if cotton percale is the right choice for your bedroom.

What Is Cotton Percale, Exactly?

Contrary to popular belief, cotton percale isn’t a different material, but rather a specific weaving method. As the name suggests, percale is made from natural cotton fibers, but it's the way those fibers are woven that defines the fabric as percale.

When researching fabric quality, you'll often come across the concept of thread count, which indicates how tightly woven and durable the material is. To qualify as percale, the weave must include at least 80 threads per cm² — while basic cotton can have as few as 40 threads per cm². This makes percale a high-quality fabric. At RKF Home, we go even further, using 120 threads per cm² (300TC) for our luxury cotton percale.

How Do You Achieve That Density?

To produce high-thread-count percale, we use only the finest and longest cotton fibers. This allows us to create an exceptionally tight and even weave, where each horizontal thread crosses over and under one vertical thread. This technique is what gives cotton percale its matte finish, soft touch, and remarkable durability.

What’s the Difference Between Percale and Cotton Sateen?

You’ve likely heard of cotton sateen — another premium weave with a high thread count. In fact, RKF Home’s sateen can contain up to 240 threads per cm² (600TC)!

The main difference is in the weave structure:

  • Sateen uses a weave where each thread passes over three threads and under one, giving it a shiny, silky appearance.

  • Percale, on the other hand, follows a one-over-one-under weave, creating a crisp, matte finish.

Why Choose Cotton Percale?

Cotton percale has many advantages. It's lightweight, soft, resilient, and naturally breathable, even with its high thread count. These qualities make it a favorite in the world of luxury bed linen.

Thanks to its exceptional softness, which actually increases with each wash, and its breathable nature, choosing percale for your sheets, duvet covers, or pillowcases ensures uninterrupted, comfortable sleep.

If you have sensitive skin, tend to sleep hot, or often sweat at night, cotton percale is an ideal choice. Its airy weave promotes freshness and ventilation, helping to regulate body temperature all night long.

In fact, because of its lasting softness and durability, most leading luxury hotels around the world have chosen percale bedding for their guest rooms.
