What Is Cotton Percale, Exactly?

Contrary to popular belief, cotton percale isn’t a different material, but rather a specific weaving method. As the name suggests, percale is made from natural cotton fibers, but it's the way those fibers are woven that defines the fabric as percale.

When researching fabric quality, you'll often come across the concept of thread count, which indicates how tightly woven and durable the material is. To qualify as percale, the weave must include at least 80 threads per cm² — while basic cotton can have as few as 40 threads per cm². This makes percale a high-quality fabric. • Sateen uses a weave where each thread passes over three threads and under one, giving it a shiny, silky appearance.

• Percale, on the other hand, follows a one-over-one-under weave, creating a crisp, matte finish.
